If so, you have come to the right place! Welcome!
Studies show that a significant percentage of high school students are not sure as to what kind of career they want enter in to and develop after leaving high schools or even after graduation from colleges.
In the USA alone, an estimated 20-50% of students enter college undecided about their career, while an estimated 75% report having changed their major at least once (https://www.bridgeport.edu).
Similar studies in Australia shows that, at the enrolment-stage to university and during their studies, most students were pessimistic about their career outcomes and felt largely unsupported in identifying suitable career goals (https://files.eric.ed.gov/fulltext/EJ1235846.pdf)
If this is the case in more affluent countries such as the USA and Australia, one can imagine how worse it can be for young people in less affluent communities such as those in Africa, Asia and Latin America.
My own experience while at school or after entering university was that of uninformed blind move. I knew that I had to study and graduate in something but had no clue as to which discipline, I should pursue in my future professional career and neither did I have a luxury of receiving career advice from my parents or teachers and I was not alone.
Parents or guardians play important role to influence the level of education or training that their children achieve; the knowledge they have about work and different occupations; the beliefs and attitudes they have to working; and the motivation they have to succeed.
Similarly, teachers play an even higher role in shaping future careers of their students. Especially career guidance teachers to have a responsibility to help students clearly define their career goals based on their interests and abilities.
The question is: do parents/guardians or teachers have the knowledge and skills required to provide career counselling? The answer in most cases is- No they don’t!
